The New York Rangers 2011 season included a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their presence though was short lived as they were dispatched in five games by the top seeded and their recent playoff nemesis the Washington Captials. The Capitals also knocked the Rangers out of the playoffs in 2009 in a hard fought seven-game series. On the plus side for the Rangers, they won 44 games in 2010-2011 which is their most regular season wins since 2005. Offensively the Rangers and superstar winger Marion Gaborik were a bit of a disappointment. Gaborik only played in 60 games due to injury He was limited to only 48 points including a very non-Gaborik like 22 goals. As the focal point of the Rangers' offense, there was no way that they banked on Gaborik scoring 20 less goals then he did in 2009-2010. If the Rangers want to be back in the playoffs next season, Gaborik must stay healthy and be the top notch goal scorer that he is. On the defensive side of the game, the Rangers were able to count on the always reliable Henrik Lundqvist. He went 36-27-5, including 11 shutouts. In addition he had a 92.3 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.28. The Rangers even got a solid contribution from veteran backstop Martin Biron who went 8-6 with a goals against average of 2.13 in 17 games. On the blue line the Rangers were led by youngsters Marc Staal and Dan Girardi and upfront veteran tough guy and the much hated Sean Avery. The biggest problem that plagued the Rangers was injuries. Only four players played in all 82 regular season games; with Gaborik being the biggest loss. However, the Rangers only got 24 games from former all-star Chris Drury and 19 games from veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe. While no team can truly blame injuries for all of their struggles, the Rangers can point to the fact that they made the playoffs in spite of those injuries. With playing in one of the countries' largest media markets and one of the world's most famous arenas, Madison Square Garden, the Rangers have always had the ability to attract and acquire talent to their roster. With young contenders up and down the Eastern Conference the Rangers will have to keep with their aggressive and continual retooling approach if they hope to be right back in the thick of things in 2012-2013 and make fans with New York Rangers tickets happy.
