It was in Virginia that he met Hugo in a high school band camp where he was a drummer and Hugo played tenor saxophone. Hugo and Pharrell formed a 4-piece "R&B type" group along with friends Shay and Mike Etheridge, now known as The Neptunes, around the 90s. After their graduation they were signed by Teddy Riley as a band. So while working with Teddy Riley, Pharrell went on to write Riley's verse for Wreckx-N-Effect's 1992 hit "Rump Shaker" which was a favorite on Billboard Hot 100 and earned them two Platinum records. In August 2002, The Neptunes were declared "Producers of the Year" at both The Source Awards and the Billboard Music Awards. They then released a self-credited album called, ‘The Neptunes Present... Clones', which featured songs and remixes from various artists. But it was the Grammy Awards of 2004, which certainly cemented William, as a rock artist for his performance of The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" on drums accompanied by Sting, Dave Matthews, and Vince Gill. He won two Grammy Awards that night, one for ‘Producer of the Year' under Non-Classical category, and another for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album' for his work on Justin Timberlake's No.2 Billboard hit "Justified". With Gwen Stefani, Pharrell staged his opening single "Can I Have It Like That" from his debut solo album on September 9, 2005. It made quite a mark in the UK top charts but didn't fare well in the US charts. Pharrell has also performed at the concert for Diana on July 1, 2007 and at the Brazilian leg of Live Earth at Rio de Janeiro on July 7. This year the artist has recorded his second album, "Out of My Mind," with his new band "The Yessirs". The bootylicious Beyonce's "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," was also produced by Pharrell.
