Polyphonic Spree
The group was started by DeLaughter, and at times the band has had 13 to 27 members. Presently the band has 24 members. The three original members of the group, Tim DeLaughter, Mark Pirro and Brian Wakeland were earlier part of the band Tripping Daisy. However after the tragic death of guitarist Wes Berggren in 1999, the band disbanded. DeLaughter took temporary hiatus from the music world and began to run Good Records, a record shop in Dallas. However he came out of his self imposed exile in 2000 when he, Pirro and Wakeland were asked to make a 30-minute album in support of Grandaddy. Instead of reforming the old band, DeLaughter got the brainwave to start a modern symphonic rock band. Inspired by experimental rock bands of the seventies like the Electric Light Orchestra, DeLaughter roped in different musicians to form Polyphonic Spree. The band composed and practiced half-hour of music, and when it was performed live, it got a tremendous amount of positive response.
The songs from the band's first show were recorded and given out to doubting venues that were unwilling to host the enormous band. To further popularize the bands' music Delaughter sold home-made copies in Good Records. The hard work paid off and the demand for the CD grew. Right from the first show the band has worn white robes in its live performances. Band not only became popular in its native town but also in the UK. Inspite of the growing popularity of the band, its record company, 679 Recordings dropped it. Not the one to be dithered by minor hurdles, Polyphonic Spree signed a new recording deal with Hollywood Records in 2004. The same year the band came out with its second effort, 'Together We're Heavy' which was well accepted. In 2004 itself the band was featured in television programs such as; Scrubs and Las Vegas. The band also performed the score of the 2005 movie Thumbsucker. In 2007 the band came out with its third album, The Fragile Army.

The Beginning Stages of... (2002) Together We're Heavy (2004) The Fragile Army (June 19, 2007)
The Polyphonic Spree from Dallas, Texas, describes itself as a 'choral symphonic rock' group. The band is mostly made up of a 10-person choir, a pair of keyboardists, a percussionist, drummer, bassist, guitarist, flautist, trumpeter, trombonist, violinist/violist, harpist, French horn player, a pedal steel player, theremin player, and an electronic effects person. The individual members and the number of musicians alter often because of the flexibility necessary in traveling with such a large band. Tim DeLaughter lead vocalist as well as a keyboardist, guitarist, and percussionist par excellence is the leader or the musical director of the group.
