The hottest ticket in town is the one for President Elect, Barack Obama’s, Inauguration and it is about as hard to get these days as a ticket to the Super Bowl. The Inauguration isn’t until January 20th and tickets not only are not available yet but haven’t’ even been printed up. For security reasons they won’t even be handed out until a week before the event. Each member of the House of Representatives should get about 200 tickets and it is up to them how to hand them out. This is a huge task. The offices of the Representatives are fielding hundreds of calls from people looking for tickets. There are a total of 240,000 tickets available and residents from each congressional district can ask for tickets but who knows how they decide who gets the lucky ticket. At this point having a lottery or giving tickets out based on the order the calls came in are options for handing them out.
Because tickets are so hard to come by, some websites have been popping up trying to make very expensive deals with people trying to get their hands on a ticket. By handing out tickets so close to the event, government officials are trying to put the kabash on these types of ticket sales. In fact several prominent websites and auction sites like EBay and Ticket Network have agreed to not post any ticket offering on their sites. There is just too much of a security risk. At this point every person who gets a ticket will have to be run through the computer systems to be checked out.
Now think about this, even if you are able to get a ticket, where will you sleep? Hotels have been booked for months and if you are lucky to get one you will be paying a ton of money for the privilege to rest your head somewhere. People in Washington DC are even renting out spare rooms in their homes for $600 for the night. If you do make it out there and have a place to stay there are Inaugural events that don’t need tickets. There is the parade and watching the ceremony from the National Mall, where there are expected to be 1 million in attendance. There will be video monitors to help you see what is actually taking place. Numbers are going to be record breaking at this Inauguration
