Well the big Christmas weekend box office numbers are in and all though most areas in the economy are suffering right now, the movie industry broke some records. The good news is that 5 big movies opened over the weekend and that was a record number in and of itself. Let’s start with “Marley and Me”, my personal favorite as well. I mean really, Jennifer Anniston, Owen Wilson, and an adorable pup; they couldn’t really go wrong, could they? This movie, from 20th Century Fox, generated 51.7 million dollars over the 4 day weekend. Not bad for a sweet romantic movie. Not only that, it seems that “Marley and Me” had the biggest Christmas day opening ever, of 14.75 million. The movie actually beat out “Ali”, which had held the record from back in 2001. I know, I couldn’t quite believe it myself.
Now I have to say, although I am a huge Brad Pitt fan, I was glad to see Jen get her day by having the higher grossing movie then her ex. I mean come on, she needed that. Brad’s movie, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, came in second with about 39 million dollars. This is also a good movie, with an interesting premise. The main character, played by Brad, is actually born an old man and is dying as a baby, so totally backwards of normal. Cate Blanchett is also in the film with him. The movie was adapted from the book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The next big winner goes to Adam Sandler and his Disney movie, “Bedtime Stories”. This movie made about 38.6 million dollars and is about a man who tells bedtime stories to his niece and nephew and then they come true in real life. So you can imagine how funny this movie is for kids and adults with Adam Sandler telling the stories.
The last 2 movies go to Tom Cruises “Valkyrie” which brought in 30 million dollars. This is the World War II movie that they have been hyping up for what seems like years. Originally there had been some controversy attached to getting the movie made but I guess it was worth it seeing that it was number 4 at the box office this weekend. And number 5 goes to another all-time great funny man – Jim Carrey. His comedy, “Yes Man” made it with 22.4 million dollars. With the help of these 5 Christmas movies, the industry was up 8% from the same weekend last year. Pretty encouraging news for Hollywood in such discouraging times.
