Somehow this week just became all about Britney. First it is announced that MTV will be producing a VMA Tribute. Then it comes out that the pop star is considering plastic surgery. Finally, the flurry of news items prompt Joshua Ostroff to wax poetic about the superstar.

I remember the first time I saw Britney Spears on MTV. She was introduced to me in a Catholic school girl uniform with her white top tied off above the midriff and thigh high socks. It was age appropriate for me to drool as she made a pink sports bra a sex symbol since I was in high school.

Now, more than a decade later, MTV will be celebrating the pop singer with a seven performance set. As reported on Pop Dust, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Janet Jackson, Demi Lovato, Ke$ha, Nick Minaj, and Lady Gaga will be paying homage to the celebrity that kept MTV relevant as they stopped playing anything more than a few brief seconds of music videos. This is according to a promo released last Friday.

If that was not enough, an item in the Hollywood Dame notes that despite the hectic touring schedule, Britney Spears is pursuing plastic surgery. She is apparently unhappy with her boobs, complaining that they are lopsided after having two sons. Well, those unbalanced tatas are racking up millions in Britney Spears tickets on the Femme Fatale Tour, so perhaps she should rethink her decision. Of course, her father has to approve any such purchase, but he is reportedly willing to consider the operation as long as the star visits a psychologist before going through with the procedure.

Sadly, this is perhaps the curse of becoming a sex symbol at the age of 17. By the age of 29 you have unreasonable expectations. I am sure her father, the psychologist and AOL Music blogger Joshua Ostroff would be pleased if she changed her mind at the last second. Ostroff was inspired to right a short blog, “Britney Spears, the Pop Star Who Lived”, after the news of her tribute. He proclaims her a survivor in the light of Amy Winehouse’s death. Britney managed to avoid the 27 Club Curse and we are all overjoyed that she did not join a list that also includes Kim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain.

Really, the news of Winehouse’s passing in juxtaposition to this Britney Spears tribute makes me believe that MTV wanted to celebrate those pop stars who have survived. The past few years the pop world has been dominated by the untimely death of Michael Jackson and the sobering news of Amy Winehouse’s demise could only have made the mood more somber.

Britney has managed to come through a quick marriage, media harassment, a bad divorce, and so much more and is back on tour. For once I think MTV may be right on the ball here in celebrating her career and it is a testament that Spears will be singing the final song of the seven track set list because she is going to continue to be apart of our pop-oriented lives for much, much longer. Heck, perhaps one day she will have her own Las Vegas residency!
