Present Music is one of the preeminent ensemble of musicians, specialized in new music in the US. The ensemble performs a program in Milwaukee, and sometimes in Madison, six times a year. The program is developed by artistic director Kevin Stalheim. The program performers ranges from a core group of seven musicians to a group of twenty. The Ensemble adjusts its ensemble to allow for a variety of instrumental combinations and the requirements of program. The concert is made quite imaginative and provocative by the performers and described by many as "crackling with wit and intelligence", "wildly varied", "fun", and "unpredictable".
The mission of Present Music is to "engage artists and the audience in imaginative and provocative experiences with new music through ensemble performance and education". Present Music was founded in 1982 and located in Milwaukee. It has presented country's most elating and significant composers in its concerts and has generated a large audience for new music in Milwaukee. Present Music aims to create new sound and encourage rising composers. The ensemble has accredited more than 20 major new works since its inception.

Artist Biography - Present Music

 Various renowned composers of Present Music who has been commissioned till date include Kamran Ince, Joan LaBarbara, Roberto Sierra, Qu Xiaosong, Scott Lindroth, Lois V. Vierk, Daron Hagen, Mary Ellen Childs, Daniel Lentz, Jerome Kitzke, Bright Sheng, John Adams, John Harbison, Michael Torke, David Lang, Eleanor Hovda, Jerome Kitzke, Juliet Palmer, Guy Klucevsek, and many more. Besides arranging its season of performance, Present Music administrate an education program having composers work "in residence" with emerging artists. These young learners are assisted by expert seniors in composing and creating meaningful and novel musical works. The educational program "Creation Project" results in public performances of the student compositions by student and professional musicians.
Present Music has toured throughout the US holding its concerts. It has taken part in many leading international music festivals including the Interlink Festival of New American Music in Japan in1992, the Bang on a Can Festival in New York City together with the Istanbul Symphony at the 1999 Istanbul International Music Festival. It has performed in Beijing and Shanghai, China.
Several important national grants have been received by Present Music from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Reader's Digest / Meet the Composer Commissioning Program, the Aaron Copland Fund for American Music. The ensemble has won the ASCAP/CMA Adventuresome Programming award for three times in the past seven years. National Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Radio has also broadcast Present Music's work. .
The musical works of Present Music can be found on eight compact disc recordings. These discs include the works of the talented composers like, Kimmo Hakola, Daniel Lentz, Kamran Ince, Michael Torke, Jerome Kitzkeand Joseph Koykkar on the innova, Albany, Argo and Northeastern labels.
