In 1968, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College was established due to a shortage of professional clowns. The school opened in Venice Florida but eventually moved to Baraboo Wisconsin. The school was open until 1997 and trained almost 1,500 clowns. The school was unique in that tuition was free and students were only responsible for room and board and their own incidentals. Students at Clown College were mostly men and averaged about 50 students per year. Through the sessions, instructors kept a keen eye on their strongest students and these were the performers who would be offered one year contracts at the end of the year. Some of the classes at Clown College were make up application, juggling, pantomime, costume design and stilt walking. The students practiced together 8 ½ hours a day and came up with much of the new material for the next seasons shows.

The world's greatest circus originally started out as two separate circuses. In 1907 the Ringling Bros. purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the two actually ran separately for 12 years until they came together as one in 1919. The original Ringling brothers actually started their circus in 1884. They were a small circus that toured mostly in the Midwest and Northeast part of the US. Originally they moved the circus with animal drawn caravans, but as they grew they were able to purchase train cars and move that circus that way. This mode of transportation made it a lot easier to move the circus around and helped the circus to grow. The premier show of the newly merged Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was on March 29, 1919 at Madison Square Garden. The show and circus itself became a huge success. However between the Great Depression and World War ll and the influence of TV and movies the circus did hit upon hard times. IT wasn't until Irvin an Israel Feld bought the company and were able to make some drastic changes did the circus see a come back. First they moved the show into an indoor venue to replace the outdoor tent shows. The broke the show into two tours and Red tour and a Blue Tour and this allowed more shows in more places with 2 different shows going on at the same time, thus when possible people had the opportunity to see watch 2 different productions of the circus. The Feld Brothers also owned the Disney on Ice shows so they were already familiar with big scale productions. As of 2008 the shows are on their 138th edition and still tour with the Blue and Red tour concept. Each circus is so big it averages 60 train cars, stretching just about a mile. In 2006 the Blue Tour tried something new and for the first time in the act there were no tigers, tight rope walkers or trapeze artists and they went from 3 rings to one. Needless to say as of 2008, all of those missing well loved performances are back on the Blue Tour.
