Matching to salsa music, Salsa is a kind of partner dance form done in handhold. However sometimes it is done solo too. The word Salsa has got the derivation from the Spanish word salsa meaning sauce which here means flavor or style. The evidences from many musicologists and historians of music indicate that the name salsa was gradually recognized among dancers. It took various decades to set the name salsa in the mind of dancers.
The word Salsa appeared for the first time by Ignacio Piñeiro on radio when he dedicated a composition to an old African man who sold butifarras in Central Road in Matanzas.butifarras is a sausage-like product. It is a song titled "Échale salsita", wherein the major refrain and chorus goes "Salsaaaaa! échale salsita, échale salsita." After this start of salsa, during the early 1950s, Salsa again came to the limelight when commentator and DJ "bigote" Escalona announced dance ables with the title: "the following rhythm contains Salsa." Eventually, after so much of hype of salsa, the Spanish-speaking population of the New York area baptized Celia Cruz as the "Queen of Salsa."
Salsa is performed at two bars of four beats. This is an eight-beat pattern over which salsa is danced. This is a typical dance in which three steps are to be used at each four beats, one beat being skipped. However, A kick , a smart tap or a flick is given for this skipped beat. Typically the music for salsa involves complicated percussion rhythms and is fast with around 180 beats per minute. Salsa dance is totally different from Foxtrot or Samba. It is slot or spot dance which is interesting, romantic as well as energetic. It is called spot dance because the salsa couple occupies a fixed area o the floor to dance instead of traveling over the dance floor much. Salsa dance is done as solo performance too.
