The city of San Marcos is located in the state of Texas, United States. San Marcos falls in the Hays County and is the county seat of the same. It is midway between the cities of Austin and San Antonio. According to the 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city stands at 50,371.

San Marcos was found on the banks of the river of San Marcos, which is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the entire Northern Hemisphere. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 18.3 square miles, of which 99.40% is land.

San Marcos is situated on the Balcones Fault. The spring-fed river of San Marcos is a notable water feature in the city and tourists and locals alike are attracted to it for activities, such as tubing, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. These springs and the river are home to a number of endangered species, such as the Texas Blind Salamander, Fountain Darter, and Texas Wild Rice

The natural beauty of the city makes it a popular tourist location. A popular tourist spot is the Aquarena Springs, which is a resort and an amusement park built around the springs in the city. The Aquarena Springs is particularly famous for being featured in the 1978 film 'Piranha'.
