The city of San Rafael is located in the state of California, United States. San Rafael falls in the Marin County and is the county-seat of the same. According to the 2002 United States Census Board estimates, the population of the city stands at 55,550.

San Rafael is situated in the San Francisco Bay Area. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 58.1 square kilometer, of which 73.96% is land. Historically, the city has been a major center of the entertainment industry. The famous enterprise 'Lucasfilm' was found in this city in the year 1971.
