The city of Santa Monica is located in the state of California, United States. Santa Monica falls in the Los Angeles county and is completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. According to the 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city stood at 88,050. However, a 2007 estimate by the California State Department of Finance estimated the population to be 91,124.

Santa Monica is a coastal city situated on the Santa Monica Bay of the Pacific Ocean. The city is surrounded by different areas Los Angeles, namely Pacific Palisades, West Los Angeles and Venice to its north, east and south respectively. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 41.2 square kilometer, which is 51.92% land.

The city is known for its pleasant weather all through the year and is a popular resort place. It is considered by many as the international center for skateboarding. Skateboarding is a popular culture in the city and the city hosts a number of skateboarding competitions. The famous skateboarding hub, called 'Dogtown', include parts of the city and some neighboring part of Venice.

The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium has been an important musical venue of the city and has hosted several occasions, including the Academy Awards in the 1960s.

Santa Monica is famous for being the venue of many famed international festivals and events. The 'Taste of Santa Monica' is a famous event hosted by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce. The event showcases a wide variety of eateries. Another famous event is the annual Santa Monica Film Festival.
