Artist Biography - Savage Aural Hotbed
|
This band has been enthralling audiences with their music since the year 1998, that's when the band actually banded together. They are a four member group, comprising William Melton, Dean Hawthorne, Stuart DeVaan and Mark Black. And are based in Minneapolis. Over the years, they have come to be popularly known as SAH.
Their name Savage Aural Hotbed, might appear arbitrary in the first go, however its not. On their home page they carefully, elucidate on the etymology of it, in a dictionary like fashion. As the field of art is mostly about forming your own perceptions of it. You too might want to do the same with this groups' title. So here you go 'savage' means fierce, untamed and wild; 'aural' refers to anything related to the ear, and a 'hotbed' refers to the ground that has been artificially heated up, for growing plants in temperate zones. Consequently, the phrasal agnomen boils up (because of the hotbed) to meaning. Gee! a place where wild sounds grow.
This 'found object' band has found many objects till now, to create sumptuously intriguing industrial compositions. They use everything like Taiko drums, oil-drums, power tools, concrete culverts, saw-blades and various other materials. Abundant use of these 'objects of music' features in both their performed as well as recorded music. Now 19 years and 5 albums old (innumerable mesmerizing performances not included) these guys have gathered fans from all the three genre, that is industrial, contemporary classical and techno music enthusiasts. The list gets bigger by the day. That's not all, they've collaborated with many dance troupes too. Some of them are Ballet of the Dolls as also the Flying Foot Forum. Their discography of five albums up to now comprises, The Unified Pounding Theory 2006, The Strain and Force Handbook 2001, Pressure of Silence 1997, Cold is the Absence of Heat 1995, Gomi Daiko 1992. They have also been honored with, four Minnesota Music Awards.
They've got acclaimed in the national media too, as in a broadcast of the National Public Radio, Scott Simon said '...the sound of steel and rust, oil drums and hubcaps, screeches, sparks, grinders and gears finding new fury and energy... It's also fun, it makes you smile to see a man make music with an electric saw...'. John Killacky who's the Curator Performig Arts opines 'Blasts us into the next stratosphere, combining raw and raucous sound and performance'
If you too want to share their passion for percussion from power tools, and other industrial paraphernalia. You can get the tickets, to check them out in their upcoming show.
