The city of Schenectady is located in the state of New York, United States. Schenectady falls in the County of 'Schenectady' and is also the county-seat of the same. According to the 2000 Census, the population of the city stands at 61,821, making it the ninth most populous city in the state of New York.

The city got its name from a Mohawk word, which means 'near the pines'. Schenectady is merely eighteen miles away from the state capital of Albany. It was incorporated in the year1798 and as per the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 11.0 square miles, of which 98.73% is land.

The city is situated in eastern portion of the state of New York, at the confluence of the rivers of Mohawk and Hudson, and is a part of the metropolitan area surrounding Albany, which is commonly referred to as 'Capital District'.

Schenectady is a popular tourist location and features many attractions, such as the 'Edison Exploratorium', the 'Empire State Aerosciences Museum' and the 'Schenectady Museum'.
