Artist Biography - Schism

An analysis of Schism has shown that there are meter changes. These analysis was presented by Guitar One magazine released in the year 2001, in their August issue. The analysis has been done by Adam Perlmutter. The song starts in 5/4 for one measure which is followed by 21 measures of 6/4 (or 5/8 and 7/8 alternating), which continues till the first interlude, which is a bar of 3/8, three bars of 13/8, and a bar of 10/8. It can be also termed as four 13/8 bars, but has to be played with a 3/8 upbeat. The next verse is eight bars all in 6/4 that is followed by another interlude. This verse also follows the same pattern as the first one. This pattern brings in the section "The poetry that comes..." that conatains four bars of 6/4 which is followed by one bar of 11/8. After that another eight-bar verse in 6/4 follows, which contains the same interlude like the earlier ones. But it is bit different from the final one only in the final one. As the final10/8 bar is replaced with an 11/8 bar which sets up the middle section, which is four bars of 7/4 before settling into a pattern of alternating 12/8 and 15/8, one bar each, twelve times, and it conatains the "Cold silence..." lyrics. At the same time in the end we find the word "compassion", where there are three bars of 4/4, this lends to it a foreign sound, a bar of 2/4, and four bars of 4/4 which is established in the section of "Between supposed lovers", which is two bars of 9/8 followed by a bar of 10/8, which again follows the same pattern, a single bar of 9/8 followed by a 13/8 bar. This leads to a bit different set of 9/8 and 5/8, that appears four times before a bar of 9/8 and a bar of 6/8. The final lyrics "I know the pieces fit" again brings back the 6/4 meter for eight bars, followed by eight bars of 4/4 , which is done to finally end the song.
