Artist Biography - Silverchair
|
 Perhaps what surprised so many people was the relatively easy time Silverchair has had in the often rocky world of the music industry. The group (singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies) first started playing together at the age of 12 in their Australian hometown of Newcastle. Only a couple of years later, their song, "Tomorrow," won a national competition and soon became the No. 1 single in Australia and New Zealand. In 1995, the band's debut album, Frogstomp, was released. Although (or perhaps because) it borrowed so much from Northwestern U.S. grunge bands, it was a hit. Even Courtney Love noticed that Johns bore a marked physical resemblance to her late husband, Kurt Cobain. Everyone else mentioned his vocal resemblance to Eddy Vedder. Talk about the record's lack of originality--not to mention comments about the band member's ages--infuriated the guys. As far as they were concerned, they were very serious about their careers, even though they were still trying to finish school between worldwide tours. Luckily for all concerned, Silverchair's follow-up album, Freak Show, showed that the group had really come of age, musically. It's an excellent effort that proves the three have grown beyond their influences.
With their impending adulthood, Silverchair's age issue is slowly receding into the background. If they can maintain the quality achieved on Freak Show, there's no doubt that their career will deepen, and who knows? Maybe even jaded, over-the-hill rock critics will come to embrace them.
