As the only African team to make their way out of the group stage at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and the first to qualify for South Africa 2010, Ghana is anxious to prove they are the best on their continent. Although this is only their second appearance at the finals, the Black Stars have experienced a considerable amount of success at all levels of international play. Ghana has won four CAF African Cup of Nations titles, as well as two FIFA U-17 World Cups, while also becoming the first African team to hoist the FIFA U-20 World Cup after defeating Brazil on penalty kicks in October of last year. Having added more experience since their great 2006 performance – where they lost to Italy and Brazil, but defeated the Czech Republic and USA – Ghana is set to once again provide a major threat at Africa's first FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars clinched their spot in the finals after going undefeated in their opening four matches of the final round. They did not even surrender a single goal in the group until a surprising 1-0 loss at Benin, although that did come after Ghana had already qualified for the big stage. The key for the West Africans seemed to come in June of 2009 when they won 2-0 against both Mali and Sudan, with Germany 2006 veteran striker Matthew Amoah scoring one goal in the first match and both in the second. Ironically, Ghana seemed to be more nervous in the previous qualifying round, having only topping the group based on goal differential over Gabon and Libya, even after having lost matches to both teams.

Although Ghana may lack the explosive attack of many African teams, they rely most heavily on a world class mid-field led by Michael Essien, with the Chelsea man usually paired with Sulley Muntari and captain Stephen Appiah to make up a formidable foundation, capable of both preventing their opponent's attack while also able to create their own. At least two of the talented striker trio of Asamoah Gyan, Junior Agogo, and Matthew Amoah, will operate on the attack, while the England-based tandem of John Mensah and John Paintsil keep the defense tight in support of another Premier League player, goalkeeper Richard Kingson.
