While the expectations may be low for Nigeria in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, but it was not very long ago when the Super Eagles were seen as the most likely African nation to contend for a spot in the final four of a World Cup tournament. Although they have only a single point from their last five finals matches, and missed out on World Cup Germany 2006 entirely, Africa's most populated country looks as though they could play the role of spoiler as they have little to lose when facing the football world's best.

Following Nigeria's startling scoreless draw to Mozambique in the first match of the final round of CAF qualifying, the Nigerians were playing catch-up to Tunisia from the beginning, while back-to-back ties with the Carthage Eagles left the Super Eagles being stared down by elimination. However, Tunisia lost 1-0 in Mozambique and Nigeria twice came from a goal down to win 3-2 in Kenya. Forward Obafemi Martins was the hero of the match, entering at half-time and scoring the tying goal at the 60-minute mark and the winner just nine prior to the end of regulation – a goal which guaranteed Nigeria's trip to South Africa's World Cup.
