In what will always remain one of the all-time classic contests in FIFA World Cup history, Korea DPR jumped to a three-goal lead over Portugal within the first twenty-five minutes of play, only to have Portugal's second all-time leading scorer, Eusebio, go on to score no less than four goals in his team's 5-3 comeback victory over the Chollima. It is only as a result of all of their hard work which has the Chollima making their way back to the World Cup forty-four years after their only other appearance, where they finished eighth at England 1966.  Storming into the Asian Zone's final qualifying round from nowhere, Korea DPR defied seemingly insurmountable odds to win one of the continent's four automatic bids for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Come to think of it, the Chollima have lived up to their long-standing reputation as one of Asia's most surprising teams, with their qualifying success marking a return to world football's top tournament for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals in 1966. After close to thirty years of obscurity, the past decade witnessed somewhat of a reemergence of Korea DPR's soccer fortunes. With their women's teams running rampant over all levels of the international landscape, the men's team did come close to qualifying for Germany 2006 before actually making their way to South Africa 2010. To reach the 2010 World Cup, Korea DPR went through a grueling twenty-month qualifying run which included an amazing sixteen matches. The Chollima walked all over Mongolia in the Asian Zone's first qualifying round, winning both home and away and earning a bye to the third round as one of the eleven highest-ranked first-round victors. Once that far, Korea DPR finished second in their group behind Korea Republic, their neighbors to the south, to qualify for the final qualifying round. It was here where Korea DPR got off to an impressive start by defeating United Arab Emirates 2-1, before holding the Korea Republic squad to a 1-1 draw. Although they lost to Iran 2-1 in the next match, the Chollima bounced back with a 1-0 home win over Saudi Arabia. Even a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Korea Republic did not harm their chances too significantly, given they followed with a draw against Iran which allowed them to remain in second place. Requiring only a single point against Saudi Arabia in the closing game in order to qualify, they dug in and held on for a scoreless draw to guarantee their World Cup qualification.
