South Padre Island Information: Tickets, Venues, Events and More

The Community of South Padre Island is located in the state of Texas, United States. South Padre Island falls in the Cameron County and according to the 2000 United States Census, the population of the town stands at 2,422. However, this is not regarded as an accurate figure since a significant proportion of the population splits its time in residences in the community and other residences outside.

The barrier island lies along the Texas Gulf coast quite near the town of Port Isabel. The island community is named after the Catholic priest and settler 'José Nicolás Ballí', who was fondly referred by many as Padre Ballí. As per the United States Census Bureau, the town covers a total area of 1.9 square miles, of which 95.77% is land.

South Padre Island is know for its humid subtropical climate that is quite similar to that of the Tampa Bay Area of the state of Florida. The climate and its resort facilities are the main reasons that South Padre Island is an extremely popular tourist location. The island is a particularly active spring break destination for college students. The beaches of the island are popular attractions and there are several multistory resort hotels and condominiums along the coastline. The famous waterpark 'Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark' is also situated here.

South Padre Island is also famous for hosting a number of famous annual festivals, such as the 'South Padre International Music Festival' and the 'Texas International Fishing Tournament'. Whereas the former is a hugely popular event that is attended by over 10,000 visitors, the latter is also a quite famous and the total winnings of the event totals to about quarter of a million.
