Artist Biography - St. Louis Symphony

Established in 1880, the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra increased its fan base through regular tours of the Midwest and the East and West Coasts in the 1980s and 90s. The Orchestra toured Europe in 1985, 1993, and 1998, and the Far East in 1986, 1990, and 1995 that helped it increase its patrons in these areas too. Saint Louis Symphony has been performing at New York's Carnegie Hall to rave reviews. The albums released by the Symphony have fetched six Grammy Awards and 56 Grammy nominations.
The Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra was established with the aim, to make available good music to everyone. To fulfill its aim, the Orchestra has launched a series of innovative and nationally recognized community-oriented activities, including various education and outreach programs. The dedicated and highly motivated musicians of the Symphony have introduced classical music, to those who otherwise might not have had the opportunity, to understand or appreciate it. In order to take the classical music to the masses, every year Symphony musicians take part in more than 300 free performances, and events throughout the greater St. Louis area.
As part of its outreach program, the Symphony takes part in the E. Desmond Lee Fine Arts Education Collaborative, a contract between the Symphony, the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Young Audiences of Saint Louis, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and more than 90 schools in 12 area school districts. Through this collaboration, the Symphony raises the standard of the music programs of member schools through various initiatives, including classroom interaction with musicians, faculty, and artists from the participating institutions.
The American conductor David Robertson is the present Music Director of the SLSO, he was appointed to the post in 2003 and will hold the post till 2010. Scott Parkman holds the office of Assistant Conductor and is also the music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra.
