Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of the New York City and is located in the state of New York. The borough falls in the county of Richmond. According to the 2000 United States Census, the population of the borough stands at 477,377, making it the least populous borough of the New York City.

Staten Island is separated from the rest of New York and the state of New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and New York Bay, respectively. As per the United States Census Bureau, the borough covers a total area of 102.50 square miles, of which 57.05% is land.

Staten Island is known to be a suburban area and is connected to Manhattan by the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry trip is a popular attraction and features views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan.
