Artist Biography - Steve Azar
|
Steve Azar grew up in Greenville, Miss., and was into music right from childhood. He was a born entertainer, by the time he was five years old he was already entertaining and performing for his family. As a child he preferred to play with the guitar rather than conventional toys. In 1982, Azar went to the Delta State University with the intention of majoring in pre-med with an emphasis on chemistry. In three years of college, he had a change of heart, and changed his major to management, although his interest had shifted to music.
His love for music led him to start a band with his brother Joe which became very popular. The band played the local circuit, and within no time formed a fiercely loyal following throughout the Southeast. The band played more than 200 shows a year, burning up the miles from Florida to Tennessee.
The Steve Azar Band enthralled more than 70,000 people at the Memphis' Overton Square on two successive New Year's Eves. The brothers were on the road for nearly seven years after which Azar decided to try for a label deal. In 1993, Azar finally shifted to Nashville at the goading of his friend, PGA champ, Jim Gallagher. He first inked a publishing deal, and then a label deal with River North Records. However, after releasing just one album the label closed. Not one to be dithered with the turn of events, Azar continued to tour. Eventually, he signed a recording deal with Mercury Nashville. In 2001 he came out with the single â€ËÅ"I Don't Have to Be Me ('Til Monday)', which became a big hit. However, he parted ways with the label before releasing any other work. He once again resumed touring and in between got surgery done to correct a hemorrhaging cyst in his throat. After recovering from the surgery, Azar inked a recording deal with an independent label, which released the album â€ËÅ"Indianola' in 2006.
