The city of Sumter is located in the state of South Carolina, United States. Sumter falls in the County of 'Sumter' and is the county seat of the same. According to the 2000 United States Census, the population of the city stands at 39,159.

Sumter is a part of the 'Sumter-South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area' and is situated merely 44 miles away from the capital city of South Carolina, Columbia. The city was incorporated in the year 1845 and was named after the American Revolutionary War hero, General Thomas Sumter. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 26.8 square miles, of which 99.40% is land.

Sumter is a popular tourist location and features a number of major attractions. The Swan Lake/Iris Gardens is particularly famous tourist attraction. The park is considered unique for its is the only park in the entire Country that features all the eight different species of swans. The parks is also related to the two famous festivals that are hosted by the city, namely the 'Iris Festival' and the 'Swan Lake Fantasy of Lights'. The former is hosted around the Memorial Day weekend and the latter features a large light display to the public.

Sumter also boasts of a prominent sporing culture and is the home of the famous sporting venue, Riley Park. The park was also the former home of the accomplished teams of 'Sumter Braves' and 'Sumter Flyers'. Presently, the baseball team P-15 is based here. Another famous sporting venue in the city is the famous 'Palmetto Tennis Center'.
