The city of Surrey is located in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Surrey falls in the regional district of Metro Vancouver. According to the 2006 Canadian Census, the population of the city stands at 437,685, making it second most populous city in the province of British Columbia and the twelfth most populous city in the whole country.

Surrey is situated at the geographical center of the large region known as the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Surrey was incorporated as a city in the year 1993 and it comprises of six town centers, namely 'Fleetwood', 'Whalley/City Centre', 'Guildford', 'Newton', 'Cloverdale' and 'South Surrey'. As per the Canada Census Bureau, the city covers an area of 122.5 square mile and is at an elevation of -134m.

The city was named after the county of Surrey in England. The city is a popular tourist location and features a number of attractions, such as its numerous festivals and events. The famous 'Canada Cup International Women's Fastpitch Tournament' is hosted in the city. The extremely popular event features a massive attendance, which goes up to as high as 93,000. The Sikh festival 'Vaisakhi' is also celebrated here amongst much fanfare. In the year 2008, the same saw an attendance of over 100,000. Another popular event here is the 'Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair', which is held at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. The event features exhibits, tradeshows, parades and community stages.

Surrey has a prominent sporing culture and is home to a number of sporting clubs, such as the famous hockey team 'Surrey Eagles'. In the year 2006, the city also hosted the Canadian national qualifying tournament.
