Artist Biography - Swearing At Motorists
|
Swearing at Motorists was started in Dayton, Ohio in the beginning of the 1990s. Initially the band comprised of Dave Doughman (guitar, vocals) and Don Thrasher (formerly of Guided by Voices). The duo released their first eponymous LP 'Swearing at Motorists' which created quite a stir in the music industry. The LP attracted the attention of Matt and Jon Fisher, who were launching an indie label. The brothers selected two songs 'King of Baltimore' and 'Sympathy for Thinkers', for their main release, 'As Seen on TV'. Swearing at Motorists followed its debut release with the EP 'Tuesday's Pretzel Night' the following year. In 1997, the band came out with its maiden full-length album 'Fear of Low Flying Clouds' which was followed by 'More Songs from the Mellow Struggle' (2000) and 'Number Seven Uptown' (2000). Around this time Don Thrasher quit the band and was replaced by Joseph Siwinski. The band with the new lineup released the EP 'Along the Incline Plane' and the LP 'This Flag Signals Goodbye' in 2002. In 2006 the band came out with yet another LP 'Last Night Becomes This Morning' and 'Exile on Gipsstrasse'
The music of Swearing at Motorists is characterized by forceful, scrunching tonic chords, emotive vocals, and raw recordings, with more stress on production than many lo-fi acts. Doughman beautifully merges tales of seemingly routine everyday happenings with occasional elements of surrealism or subtle commentary, such as in Calgon, Take Me Away! The well-loved and well-attended concerts of Swearing at Motorists are characterized by Doughman's energetic performances, which have capers such as tearing the strings out of his guitar mid-song and jumping offstage, as well as comedic anecdotes relayed between, and sometimes within, songs. The band has enthralled and amused the audiences in the US as well as the UK several times.
