Artist Biography - The Gourds
|
The band comprised of multi-instrumentalist/vocalists Kevin Russell and Jimmy Smith, accordionist Claude Bernard, and drummer Charlie Llewellin. After formation, the band gigged around the vibrant Austin scene and established quite a fan following. In 1997 the band came out with their first album 'Dem's Good Beeble' which was well accepted. However, towards the end of 1977, the band saw a slight change in the lineup, Keith Langford a longtime friend of the band substituted Llewellin.
A year later the band released their follow up album Stadium Blitzer' which highlighted the band's eccentricity even more. The album had baffling subject matter that was highlighted in tracks such as 'Plaid Coat' and 'I Ate the Haggis'. Towards the end of 1998 the band's music got considerable airplay on the college radio. The cover version of 'Ziggy Stardust' and Gourds' awesome remake of Snoop Dogg's 'Gin and Juice' catapulted the band into another level. In 1999, the band came out with their third effort 'Ghosts of Hallelujah' after which their record label Watermelon Records shut shop. 'Sugar Hill Records' quickly signed the band and around this time Max Johnston former member of Uncle Tupelo and Wilco became the official member of the band. With the new lineup, the band released their fourth album 'Bolsa de Agua'. Sugar Hill also re-released almost all the earlier albums of the band. In 2002 the band came out with yet another album 'Cow Fish Fowl or Pig' which was followed by 'Blood of the Ram' in 2004. Both the albums got a tremendous response from the fans. The support tours after the release of the album were also a big hit. In 2006 the band came out with yet another album 'Heavy Ornamentals' which was followed by 'Noble Creatures' in 2007. The band has also composed the score to the Mike Woolf documentary Growin' a Beard.
