Artist Biography - The Muddy Waters Band
|
Born McKinley Morganfield in Issaquena County, Mississippi, Waters lived with his grandmother after the death of his mother. He began playing the harmonica at an early age but mastered the six strings and by the time he was seventeen, he had started playing at parties. In 1940, Waters shifted to St. Louis but almost within a year or so returned to Mississippi.
In 1943, Waters set off for Chicago in the hope of making music his career. In Chicago, he lived with a relative and picked up a day job and played at night. Big Bill Broonzy, one of the important businessmen of Chicago, assisted Muddy to break into the cutthroat market by letting him open Broonzy's shows in the rowdy clubs. In 1945, Water's got his first electric guitar; it was a gift from his uncle. Waters recorded a couple of songs but they were not released, however, his 1948's 'I Can't Be Satisfied' and 'I Feel Like Going Home' changed his fortune. His popularity began to increase. Waters formed his own band that comprised of Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica; Jimmy Rogers on guitar; Elga Edmonds on drums; Otis Spann on piano; Big Crawford on bass; and Waters handling vocals and second guitar. The band recorded a series of blues classics all through the early 1950s, several with the help of bassist/songwriter Willie Dixon.
Soon Waters swayed over the 1950s Chicago blues scene, he and his band were creating ripples with their music. By 1956, Waters popularity began to wane and his band members' pursued their own career. He then went to England in 1958 and took away the hearts of each and every audience with his loud, amplified electric guitar and a thunderous beat. In 1977, Waters made a great come back with his LP 'Hard Again'. The Muddy Waters Blues Band at that time consisted of guitarist Bob Margolin, pianist Pinetop Perkins, and drummer Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith. The line up of the band changed frequently. In 1983 Waters dies at the age of 70, he was suffering from cancer.
