Artist Biography - The Rasmus
|
Lauri Yinen and Eero Heinonen had been friends since they were nine years old. They both joined Suutarila high school where they first came across Pauli Rantasalmi and later Janne Heiskanen. In 1994, the four decided to start their own band in school and played their first show before the Christmas holiday. The band in the beginning was called the Sputnik, then Anttila then Trashmosh and then simply Rasmus.
After releasing their maiden EP, the band signed a recording deal with Warner Music Finland. In 1996 the band released their maiden album 'Peep', which was well accepted by their fans. After the release of the album, the band hit the road in support of it and played venues in Finland, Russia and Estonia. The band also got the EMMA in the 'Best New Act' of 1996 category. A year later the band came out with their second effort 'Playboys', which replicated the success of its predecessor. After the release of the album the band once again set off on an extensive tour, in which they backed acts like Rancid and Dog Eat Dog. The band also enthralled the 40,000 strong crowds at a festival, at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. In 1998, the band came out with their third studio album 'Hell of a Tester', with a video for the single 'Liquid'. The band's popularity increased a notch higher after they backed 'Garbage' and 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' when they toured Finland. In 2000, two significant changes took place Rasmus became 'The Rasmus' and drummer Janne Heiskanen quit the band and was replaced by drumming merchandise-seller Aki Hakala. With a new lineup and new name the band released their album 'Into' in 2001. The album went on to become a big hit and the band's popularity, began to soar even higher. The band's next effort 'Dead Letters' was released in 2003. The album peaked at various charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as in Finland. The singles from the album too did well and topped the music charts of various European countries. In 2005, the band came out with yet another album 'Hide from the Sun' and as expected did extremely well. The band has already started working on their next album 'Black Roses' which is scheduled for release in March 2008.
