A Little Night Music attracted a Hollywood star itching to perform live theater (Zeta-Jones) and a film, television, and stage legend (Lansbury). Debuting on December 13, 2009, the production immediately sold thousands of theater tickets. The celebrated revival was nominated for many Tony Awards, but only won with Zeta-Jones taking home the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. The revival would close briefly in late June as the contracts for Lansbury and Zeta-Jones came to an end. Bernadette Peters, a respected actress and singer, took over Catherine Zeta-Jones role as Desiree Armfeldt and Elaine Stritch, a revered actress most recently recognizable as Jack Donachy's wretched mother on NBC's 30 Rock, will take over Lansbury's role as Madame Armfeldt. A Little Night Music is the story of the elder Madame Armfeldt, her granddaughter Fredrika, a self-absorbed actress Desiree Armfedlt, and a host of lovelorn and meddling characters on a single night in the Swedish countryside at the beginning of the 20th century. Song, dance, and plans gone awry to sway lovers make this a terrific musical for theater fans enjoying a comedic, labyrinth of a plot. A Sondheim work, the music and lyrics are of the utmost quality. OnlineSeats will have A Little Night Music tickets while this revival plays on Broadway at the Walter Kerr Theatre and once it leaves to find a new home, perhaps touring the nation.
