American Psycho originally hit the shelves in the early 1990s as a bestselling satire by Bret Easton Ellis. Then, the novel became a screenplay and went into production as a movie of the same name starring Christian Bale. Now, nearly a decade later the story of a murderous banker as obsessed with modern fashion and music as he is with death by power tool is in production as a Broadway musical. Yes, American Psycho tickets will be available at a currently unknown date in the future for a major theatrical stage.
The Broadway musical will be use one the theatrical adaptation written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik (fittingly a former popular singer-songwriter) will act as the composer. Aguirre-Sacasa first rose to prominence as a writer for Marvel Comics, but also has dabbled as a playwright. His most recent work is Doctor Cerberus, which will debut in the spring of 2010 at the South Coast Repertory Theatre in Costa Mesa, CA. Sheik has been working as a composer since 2006 when he penned the composition to the musical Nero and has even won a Tony Award for his work with Spring Awakening.
The biggest shock from the movie is the unanswered questions at the very end of the increasingly deranged story. The biggest shock in the book is perhaps the graphic detail with which the murders and various despicable acts of this young murderous yuppie. The Broadway musical is sure to fall somewhere in the middle.
