Arcadia debuted on April 13, 1993 at the Royal National Theatre in London under the direction of Trevor Nunn and starring Rufus Sewell, Felicity Kendal, Bill Nighy, and Emma Fielding. It earned high praise for its dramatic and comedic elements and won the 1994 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play. In fact, Arcadia is considered to be perhaps the best English-language play of the modern age. The West End production transferred to Broadway in March 1995 but with a different cast, notably starring Billy Crudup, Robert Sean Leonard, and Paul Giamatti. The American production won the 1995 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the 1995 Tony Award for Best Play.
