Boston Marriage
"Boston Marriage" is the new play from renowned playwright David Mamet inspired from the famous Henry James novel, "The Bostonians."His previous works include the provocative "Oleanna," the mysterious "The Cryptogram," and the intensely personal, "The Old Neighborhood." Dircted by Mamet himself, the sets are designed by Sharon Kaitz and J. Michael Griggs. Costumes are by Harriet Voyt. The Lighting has been done by John Ambrosone. The talented cast includes Rebecca Pidgeon, Felicity Huffman, and Mary McCann.
The term "Boston marriage" is the tag given to middle or upper-class women--often intellectuals, artists, or feminists, who because of independent incomes or careers, lived together intimately without men. To what extent these relationships were explicitly sexual is debatable, but the participants were clearly dependent upon each other for emotional support.

Show Biography - Boston Marriage
|
Mamet's latest work breaks a few cliches for the playwright in many ways, firstly it features an all-female cast, secondly the story is set in a historical rather than a contemporary setting. Boston Marriage basically revolves around a mysterious relationship that two women share in a turn-of-the-century America. Through beautifully written and surprisingly comic dialogs, the secrets of this relationship are eventually revealed.
In Boston Marriage, the author has replaced the greyness with elegance, and the abrasive verbal exchanges for the high class parlor talk that takes place between two Victorian ladies. Their relationship reflects the living arrangements of many unmarried women of that period. Anna and Claire are two scheming ladies of fashion who live together. Anna is excited because she has recently become the mistress of a very wealthy man, who has gifted her an enormous emerald and an income to match. Claire on the other hand has fallen for a respectable young lady and is trying to convince the jealous Anna to help her. Although there is no sexual ambiguity in the play, both of Mamet's characters vividly express their sensual desires. Their entire plan comes aground when the emerald necklace Anna has given Claire is recognized by the girl as one that belongs to her own mother! In short, her father is Anna's protector.
