It was first performed at Teatro Apollo, Rome, January 19, 1853. A staple in the standard operatic repertoire, Il Trovatore is, according to Opera America, the seventeenth most performed opera in North America. In 1857 Verdi revised the opera for Paris as Il trouvere and added a ballet. Act I The opera stars from the guard room in the castle of Luna, Spain. Fernando who is the captain of the guards, orders the guards to keep watch while Di Luna wanders restlessly beneath the windows of Leonora, lady-in-waiting to the Princess, whom he loves. Luna's heart is torn with jealousy against his fortunate rival, the Troubadour Manrico. To keep the guards from falling asleep Ferrando starts to tell them about the history of the count to the guard. It appears that a Gypsy of dreadful aspect had once exercised her magic arts upon the little brother of the count, making the child weak and ill, and for this had been burnt alive as a witch. Before dying she ordered daughter Azucena to avenge her, which vengeance had been partially accomplished by the carrying off of the child. Although no news had been heard of him, the father refused to believe in his son's death, and dying, commanded his son, Count di Luna, to seek for the Gypsy. Next scene takes us to garden in the palace of the princess. Leonora confesses her love for Manrico to her confidante, Inez. When they have gone, Count Luna hears the voice of his rival. Leonora in the darkness mistakes the count for her lover, when Manrico himself enters the garden, and she rushes to his arms. The count recognizes Manrico as his enemy, who has been condemned to death, and compels him to fight. Leonara tries to intervene but cannot stop them from fighting. Manrico could have killed the count but, as he explains later to his mother, he mysteriously restrains himself, and escapes.
