Dancing At Lughnasa
Dancing at Lughnasa is a play written by Brian Friel. It is set in a fictional town called Ballybeg, in Ireland's Donegal County, in August 1936. The play is narrated from the point of view of Michael. He recollects the summer in his aunt's cottage when he was seven years old.
Dancing at Lughnasa starts out so simply, laced as it is with the comings and goings of quotidian life, the cooking, and cleaning, nattering, and whining, the joking of the lives of the five grown sisters of the Mundy family
There are five Mundy sisters Kate, Maggie, Agnes, Chris, Rose all unmarried. Kate, the oldest, is a school teacher and is the only member with employment. Agnes and Rose knit gloves to be sold in town and help maintain the house with Maggie and Chris (Michael's mother) who have no income at all.

 The world of the five sisters is infiltrated by two visitors. One is Uncle Jack, he is back after spending 25 years as a missionary tending to lepers in Uganda. He is unwell, suffering physically from malaria and spiritually from being cut off from his faith. The other visitor is Gerry, a Welshman who visited Ballybeg seven years earlier and impregnated Chris, creating the narrator of the play, Michael. He is a clown and a vagabond he visits rarely and always arrives unannounced. He has returned this time to inform everyone that he is joining the International Brigade to fight in the Spanish Civil War.
Dance is one of the echoing themes of the play. Deep in the hills of Lughnasa, a pagan rite is performed honoring Lugh, the god of the sun worshipped by the ancient Celts. A boy has been painfully burned in this year's bonfire. As the play progresses, every character will, by the final curtain, be painfully, if only symbolically, burned as well.
It was first performed on April 24th, 1990 at the Abbey Theater in Dublin, from where it moved to Broadway. The Original Cast was Frances Tomelty as Kate Mundy, Anita Reeves as Maggie Mundy, Bríd Ní Neachtain as Rose Mundy, Bríd Brennan as Agnes Mundy, Catherine Byrne as Christina Mundy, Gerard McSorley as Michael Evans, Paul Herzberg as Gerry Evans and Barry McGovern as Jack. The play was directed by Patrick Mason. "Dancing at Lughnasa," was made into a film in 1998 starring Meryl Streep as Kate Mundy and directed by Pat O'Connor.
