Das Rheingold is the first of the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, originally conceived as a simple introduction, it has become one of the most exciting and entertaining operatic pieces in the last 200 years. Wotan, ruler of the gods, and Fricka try and renegotiate a deal with giants who have erected them a castle in exchange for Fricka's sister Freia, who also provides the golden apples that keep these gods young. The beginnings of the remaining Ring des Nibelungen operas are laid here, foreshadowing the end of an era of the gods and the beginning of another.

Richard Wagner, a famed German composer, conductor, and writer, wrote this series of novels over the course of 30 years. Originally intending to write and stage a single opera, Ring des Nibelungen slowly evolved into a four-part series beginning with Das Rheingold.
Das Rheingold debuted on September 22, 1869 in Munich by itself and seven years later on August 13, 1876 in the first complete cycle of the Ring des Nibelungen tetralogy.
The cycle will be on stage at the Met this coming fall, winter, and through the beginning of spring.
