It's not often that we get to see an illuminating drama by a playwright as venerable as Terrence McNally with such seasoned stars of the stage as Nathan Lane and Marian Seldes in an intimate Off-Broadway venue. The premise of Dedication or the Stuff of Dreams at first seems unremarkable: two middle-aged theater lovers, Lou (Nathan Lane) and Jessie Nuncle (Alison Fraser), try to convince the dying, eccentric millionaire Annabelle Willard (Marian Seldes) to give them her dilapidated Victorian theater in a small upstate New York town. They want to renovate it and turn it into a children's theater. However, before the first act ends, it's soon evident that this is one of McNally's most original, thought provoking stories in years.
Dedication is less a tale about the lives of theater people and more of a character-study about emotionally fragile people in transition, making amends with past mistakes, and having the courage to face uncertain futures. Although Dedication has a thin plot, the often hilarious yet sobering narrative is unusually riveting, thanks to McNally's well-developed, incandescent characters, witty dialogue, a remarkable ensemble cast, and Michael Morris's deft direction.

When Jessie's ultra-successful, rock-star daughter Ida Head (Miriam Shor) shows up after a stint in rehab, with her doting boyfriend Toby Cassidy (Darren Pettie) at her side, chaos ensues. Ida desperately tries to patch things up with her mother as the two have barely spoken to each other in years. As the story unfolds, we learn that Jessie and Lou's relationship is not as perfect as it seems. Everyone involved has been living lives built on false dreams and lies.
Annabelle, who is dying of cancer of the esophagus, shows up at the theater and offers to help make Lou's dream of owning it a reality, but there is an unpleasant string attached–one with serious ethical consequences. Marian Seldes, at age 77, gives one of the most challenging and exhilarating performances of her career, imbuing her character with jet-black humor and a brutal honesty that is, at times, difficult to watch. This is a dark, heartbreaking story that may remind audiences more of something by Edward Albee than McNally. Dedication or the Stuff of Dreams is, without question, one of the best Off-Broadway plays of the year, and a trenchant first production of the 2005-2006 season for Primary Stages. The show has a limited run through September 18, so don't miss it.
