He struggles with the idea of freedom and society and their inherent conflict. Alan explores the foundations that led him to find a sexual attraction to the horse and a devotion to the equestrians as gods, with Equus being the model for God. His family life, the strict Christian mother and the atheist father, are explored and the contradictions run deep. The groundbreaking work was written by Peter Shaffer in 1973. Shaffer was inspired to right the stage performance by a story he read in the newspaper about a teenager who blinded horses. His desire to understand what drove the 17-year-old to such extremes produced Equus. The play debuted at the Royal National Theatre at the Old Vic in London in 1973 and starred Alec McCowen as Dr. Dysart and Peter Firth as Alan. After moving over to Broadway and won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1975 with Anthony Hopkins taking over as Dr. Dysant. Tickets sold quickly and made the play an immediate hit wherever it started production.
The latest revival brought the play back to its roots in London with Richard Griffith as Dr. Dysart and Daniel Radcliffe as Alan Strong. Equus made its way over to Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre in September of 2008 and will sell tickets until the run ends in February 2009.
