Finians Rainbow
Finian's Rainbow is a musical full of Irish ballads, gospel, and R&B that takes the audience down a entertaining road as Finian McLonergan tries to take advantage of a mythical creature and his crackpot economic theory to set himself and his daughter Sharon up for life. Tickets to this biting political satire are sure to entertain, especially given the current climate.
Finian steals a pot of gold from the leprechaun Og and flees to the a piece of land that lies within the shadow of Fort Knox. He theorizes that the fort holds special powers that makes all Americans rich, produces the best oranges in Florida, and powers the efficiency of the factories in Detroit. He moves to Rainbow Valley in the mythical state of Missitucky. There he encounters a racist U.S. Senator that wants the pot of gold for himself while Finian's daughter, not privy to his plan, finds love with a young man named Woody. The story unfolds and all is well. The unjust are punished and the just or well-meaning are rewarded.
The musical debuted tickets on Broadway in 1947. E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy wrote the book, Saidy wrote the lyrics as well, and Burton Lane wrote the music. Finian's Rainbow went on to run for an incredible 725 performances.

Show Biography - Finians Rainbow
|
 Since the original production the play has been revived several times on Broadway and has even had a film version shot in 1968. Most recently, Finian's Rainbow performed a concert version of the musical from March 26th to the 29th at the New York City Center Encores! series. That cast included Jim Norton as Finian, Kate Baldwin as Sharon, Cheyenne Jackson as Woody, and Jeremy Bobb as Og.
That production of Finian's Rainbow is scheduled too be reborn this fall at St. James Theatre. Most of the cast will return for the show that will begin its preview run on October 8 and is scheduled to open officially on October 29.
