Fire on the Mountain will take you back in time to the first few decades of 20th century summoning the lives coal miners in Appalachian Mountains. It is told through songs, little bit of dialogs while the narration is taken from diaries, interviews and news stories. The actor – musicians in the cast play a different genres of music. Like lyrical folk ballads through country tunes, bluegrass, blues laments and romping. They sing and even play various instruments like banjo, guitar, fiddle and harmonica. Many actors play more than one instrument. There are two highlighted screen showing the real pictures of the miners thus making the play very realistic.
Play shows the difficult lives of the miners. They work continuously from dawn to dusk in extremely dangerous conditions. There were no regulated safety norms for the miners. With regular mining disasters the laborers were choked by fumes, burnt by flames and trapped in the mines leading to their slow and hopeless deaths. Their personnel lives were no better with living in extreme poverty. Instead of complaining on the contrary these men loved their profession, proud of their independence, and had a strong sense of belonging to the Appalachian Mountains. The play shows a young boy eager to work in the mines and become a full- fledged miner as soon as possible. There are sick old men having black lung disease. They have nothing to leave behind for their children. There are hungry babies and wives, not confident of the fact that their husbands will return alive at night.

Fire on the Mountain shows how the farmers used to sell their land for just 25 cents an acre and again work in the mines. It also depicts the strikes, tragedies and the Pyhrric victory forcing the management concessions. But it led to the company's giving up the old methods of coal extraction for strip mining. This led to the workers losing their, water turning toxic and black. Even under these circumstances people don't loose spirit for living life and sing songs.
Peoples favorite time pass was singing and dancing and playing multiple instruments. There are humorous songs like I Wish I Was a Single Girl Again and ballads like Sweet as the Flowers in Maytime.
Some of the hard hitting and sentimental scenes are when a boy urges his mother to to leave Appalachia with him and father asks his son "Don't follow me to the coal mine".
