Sir John Eliot Gardiner is a famous English Conductor. He was born in Fontmell, Dorset on 20th April, 1943. He is the founder of Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists. Gardiner has more than 250 albums to his name. He interpreted the Baroque music on period instruments which earned him lot of popularity. Sir John Eliot Gardiner started his career as conductor at the age of 15. He studied history and Arabic from King's College, Cambridge. When he was studying at Cambridge he founded the Monteverdi Choir. With the Chior, Gardiner made his debut as conductor in 1966 at the Wigmore Hall in London. The year of 1968 saw the formation of Monteverdi Orchestra by him.. It was a complementary body to the Monteverdi Choir. In 1978 Monteverdi Orchestra was transformed to English Baroque Soloists. In 1969 at the English National Opera, Gardiner did his first London opera. In 1973 he conducted with Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride making his first appearance at Covent Garden. In 1979 he made his American debut with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He was the lead conductor of the CBC Radio Orchestra of Canada between 1980 to 1983. Sir John Eliot Gardiner was very fascinated by period music. For performing the 19th century music he formed formed a new period instrument orchestra called Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique. The orchestra in 1993 performed modern première of Berlioz's Messe solennelle. It was played from a manuscript which was lost for more than 250 years. In 1989 the Monteverdi Choir' completed its 25th years of existence. For celebrating the occasion he led the Choir on world tour. They gave performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610. In 1998 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. In 2000, for 52 weeks Sir John Eliot Gardiner performed the sacred cantatas of Bach in many churches of Europe and United States of America. The tour was named Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. Gardiner along with Monteverdi Choir toured Spain in 2000. They performed pieces from the Codex Compostelanus in churches and cathedrals.
