Paul Gauguin on whose life the musical is made was a very prominent Post-Impressionist artist of 19th century. He was born in Paris on 7th June 1848 and died on 9th May 1903. He stayed in Lima during his early childhood days. He studied in Orléans, France. After completing his education Gauguin toured to many parts of world first through merchant marines and later joined the French navy. In 1970 he came back to France and became an assistant of a broker. In 1875 he got the chance to meet Camille Pissarro through his guardian Gustave Arosa. Gauguin in his week days was a flourishing stockbroker. He painted with Cézanne and Pissaro in his free time. His paintings were not up to standards but soon made lot of improvement in his work. By 1884 he and his family shifted to Copenhagen. In Copenhagen he started a business but failed miserably. This led him to take up full time painting. In 1885 he came back to Paris while his family stayed back in Denmark. Paul Gauguin soon lost interest in traditional European painting and instead developed interest in African and Asian art. During this period the art of other cultures got lot of attention and appreciation. In 1889 he received an invitation for an exhibition by Les XX.

Paul Gauguin was attracted towards Cloisonnism form and was influenced by Japanese prints and folk art. One of his celebrated quintessential Cloisonnist work, has been The Yellow Christ in 1889. He later moved towards Synthetism form. In this form of art both color and form are given equal importance unlike in the Cloisonnism. But unluckily Gauguin was not given that much acknowledgment in France and became bankrupt as well. In 1891 he went to tropics, spending his last years in Tahiti and Marquesas Islands. Paul Gauguin breathed his last in 1903 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Marquesas Islands.
