Gem Of The Ocean is a play by Pulitzer Price winner August Wilson, it is set in 1904 at 1839 Wylie Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Hill District. It is the first installment of his decade-by-decade, ten play chronicle, often called The Pittsburgh Cycle, dramatizing the African-American experience in the twentieth century. There is Citizen Barlow who is a young man from Alabama in search of new life. He is searching for redemption. Aunt Esther is at very old age and has no hope of improvement or heal. She is his guide on a soring journey of spiritual awakening to the City of Bones.
Despite the aftereffects of the Civil War still looming hugely over its characters, the play is liberating rather than confronting. The horrifying experience of the slave trade, plants the seed for a future freedom. Free future is something that none of the residents of Pittsburgh's Hill District will ever be able to enjoy.
