The book was about chemicals, sexual, social, literary lives. Ellis had quite a tough time while writing this book, Glamorama since it took a long seven years, during those years he felt that it the book might not turn our to be too well. He felt that if that is the case he will look into other means of making a living. But then Glamorama turned out well and contains the same mix of seriousness and mockery like the other novels published by the same author. It is an espionage thriller.
Characters are drawn from those who are materially overindulged but who are spiritually malnourished. The character are thrown into a world where anything is possible, while the acts of the wealthy and beautiful is disturbed by the shocking acts of violence. The story shows that behind the photo shoots and runways there lurks real evil. There is a mixture of outrage and farce that is connected to the jet set to the heinous acts of the terrorists and that feels strangely authentic. The big part of the book is covered with the celebrity culture that is very much surreal. It's difficult to dismiss the book because it contains some familiar aspects of the materialistic society.
