The Garden Party was written in the year 1963. The story deals with Hugo, a young man who doesn't work but only plays chess that too himself. Fed up with his behavior, his father sets him to his father to an office garden party, where he joins the Liquidation Office. In the interesting turn of events, Hugo is soon playing chess with himself again, but it is on a governmental level. The Garden Party is one of the first full length play of Václav Havel. This played turned to be the most famous among the people and it also established him as an young playwright, after it was performed at Theater on the Balustrade. It was later translated by Jan Novák.
Mistake was written in the year 1983. It was a short play that is about a silent man, who is sent to prison for a crime. There he is confronted by his cell mates who are verbal in nature. They are very much eager to tell him the new rules, but the man is least bothered. This play was written soon after Václav Havel returns from prison and this is the only short play that directly deals with his prison experience. It was translated by Carol Rocamora and Tomas Rychetsky.

Since Václav Havel hails from a well-known entrepreneurial and intellectual family. He completed his schooling in 1951. From the the year 1920's to the 1940's, his family was linked to the political and cultural events that was occurring in Czechoslovakia. As a result of which, the communist government of Czech did not allow Havel to study formally, because of his family background. So what Havel did was that he entered into a four year apprenticeship as a assistant in a chemical laboratory and side by side continued his studies, by attending evening classed so that he could complete his secondary education. After completing his studies in 1954, when he went for humanities study, he was again denied admission for the same reasons. As a result he opted to study at the Faculty of Economics of Czech Technical University, but left it after two years.
He then joined the military services and after that he went on to work as a stagehand in Prague Theater On the Balustrade - Divadlo Na zábradlí and also completed a correspondence course in drama at the Theater Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU). In 1963, he wrote The Garden Party that was presented in Theater of the Absurd, at the Balustrade and it won him international acclaim. This was followed by Memorandum, another best known plays. He was later banned from the theater following the suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 and so he became politically active. His political activities resulted in multiple stays in prison. During his prison stay, he wrote Largo Desalato. He is also famous for his essays too. He became the president of Czech Republic in the year 1993.
