Heartbreak House was written by George Bernard Shaw in 1919, and was originally called Closed For Remodeling, a disastrous joke that led to box office confusion at its opening and that necessitated its retitling. According to A. C. Ward, the work argues that "cultured, leisured Europe" was drifting toward destruction, and that "Those in a position to guide Europe to safety failed to learn their proper business of political navigation"
The play has a subtitle, A Fantasia in the Russian Manner on English Themes, acknowledges its resemblance to Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. The action takes place in the decidedly Bohemian household of the elderly Captain Shotover, a dabbler in mysticism. The time, to judge from the zeppelin attack that provides the climax, is World War I, although no direct reference is made to the conflict. The characters--including Shotover's daughters Hesione and Lady Utterword, Hesione's husband Hector, and sundry others--play out their petty deceptions and grand philosophies oblivious of the momentous changes approaching. Shotover's daughter Hesione, who runs the house, invites her friend Ellie Dunn for a visit. Ellie is planning to marry the boorish millionaire Boss Mangan in order to save her idealistic, impractical father from penury. The dashing suitor whose exploits Ellie reports to Hesione turns out to be Hesione's ridiculous husband, Hector. Hesione sets out to prevent Ellie's marriage of convenience. Shotover's other daughter, Lady Utterword, returns to the topsy-turvy--and rather distasteful--world of her youth after a long stay in the colonies, where her husband has held various governorships. Also present is her ne'er-do-well brother-in-law, Randall. This combination of eccentrics gives rise to heated discussions of social theory, sexual conflict, and other typically Shavian subjects. The most revealing exchanges are those between Shotover and Ellie, who by play's end have decided to marry. The unexplained air raid has ambiguous consequences for the group, taking the lives of Mangan and a burglar, who seek shelter in a gravel pit, and exhilarating the others watching from the garden.

The author contrasts Mazzini with his employer, Alfred Mangan, who is soon to marry Mazzini's daughter. Mangan represents the "so-called realists who know that money is power, power that enables them to turn into profit for themselves the thoughts and ideas of the idealist". Dunn is allowed opportunity to succeed in business by Mangan, who later bankrupts Dunn and eventually takes over the business once it becomes robust. The ideas and enthusiasm start with Dunn, but he lacks the knowledge and ability to apply them toward improving the business.
Mazzini appears kind hearted and munificent, but ineffectual. Mangan behaves in an egotistical and unscrupulous, yet influential manner. Shaw points out to us that "modern civilization tends to make well-meaning, generous, and scrupulous people futile, and mean-spirited; self-seeking, money worshiping people powerful".
