Set in 1890s America, its plot focuses on Dolly Gallagher Levi (Lucy Peacock), a matchmaking diva who schemes to marry her client, widower Horace Vandergelder (Peter Donaldson), the rich owner of a hay and feed store in Yonkers, N.Y.
Cornelius (John Scherer) and Barnaby (Brian Sears), a bumbling pair of clerks at the feed store owned by Dolly's soon-to-be-love interest "half a millionaire" Horace Vandegelder (Walter Charles), soon escape Yonkers' nothingness for a chance dalliance in the big city. So do Vandergelder's niece, Ermengarde (Sarah Stiles) and her artist beau, Ambrose Kemper (David Havasi). (If the latter couple's romance has been more prominent in past productions, it feels unusually perfunctory and tacked on here.) Dolly and all her young charges eventually collide in the hat shop of the widow Irene Malloy (Susan Powell), who's destined to be the new Mrs. Vandergelder, but is totally unswayed by the idea. When she and her whiny assistant, Minnie Fay (Jennifer Cody), cutely meet Cornelius and Barnaby, it appears Dolly's lost her touch; love is in the air free of the old girl's influence. Of course, Dolly doesn't seem to mind since she only has eyes for Horace. But that's not her only agenda.

If there is a litmus test for an actress playing Dolly, it's performing her big anthem "Before the Parade Passes By," in which Dolly finally allows herself to break free from her dead husband's grip. Lee's strongly performed rendition of the number makes clear that Dolly's surface showiness masks an internal colorlessness, and she rousingly delivers it as an emotional breakthrough, as a sort of a sunnier version of "Rose's Turn."
The famous score by Jerry Herman is filled with fun, melodic songs that are always pleasing to the ear. Michael Stewart's book is simple, yet well written and full of comedic gems. Art Yelton serves as both Director and Musical Director and guides his troupe effectively each step of the way. The choreography, as provided by Keith Cromwell, is visually stunning, often inventive, and always appropriate. La Comedia has unfortunately chosen to use a pre-recorded musical accompaniment. Besides robbing the audience of the irreplaceable sound of a live orchestra, the tracks are also generally bland and timing problems between it and the performers occurred in several instances. Cost and space limitations may have provided no other choice to the dinner theater, but the experience of hearing live musicians is still missed.
The set design by Matthew J. Evans uses professional looking sets for some scenes (including the requisite staircase for the title song), as well as scrims, projections, and backdrops of nostalgic photographs that capture the flavor of the period quite well. A.T. Jones provides attractive and colorful costumes as well.
Hello Dolly! is the type of old-fashioned musical that is well suited to dinner theater. La Comedia has created a fine production with lots of laughs and a fine cast, especially Gwendolyn Jones as matchmaker Dolly Levi.
