Here Lies Jenny, a theatrical exploration of a mature woman told through the language of Kurt Weill songs starring Broadway performer Bebe Neuwirth, is not a typical musical. It is a depressing, individual portrait of life once the good days have passed by, expressed through music and lyrics. (Think of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, with one main character, less structure and creepy German overtures.)
The songbook of Kurt Weill, whose credits include The Threepenny Opera, Lady in the Dark and Lost in the Stars, consists mainly of dark songs exploring social politics and the lower boundaries of human emotion. Here Lies Jenny, conceived and directed by Roger Rees, spins 21 of Weill's German and English tunes (with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, Ira Gershwin and Langston Hughes, among others) into a straightforward, yet oddly incoherent narrative.

Visually, Neil Patel's set of a concrete wall, a steel door, and a dirty mirror is a handsome, welcoming invitation to a world of dejection. In a dark bar-room at the bottom of the world, Jenny (Bebe Neuwirth) tells the story of her past to a random assortment of male onlookers (Greg Butler, Ed Dixon and Shawn Emamjomeh) and a female piano-player (Leslie Steifelman). There, she escapes the pain of her present by remembering the joys of her past as a vivacious diva of the stage and the bed. A 75-minute psychological examination later, Jenny leaves the underground, ready to face the world again with fixed self-belief.
Ree's setup, unfortunately, lacks movement once Jenny is successfully introduced, and the show shifts from Jenny's narrative to Bebe Neuwirth's cabaret. And in the end, the plot reaches a hopeful conclusion for the future of Jenny without any climaxes or indications of conflict.
The show's entertainment value lies in the dedicated performance of Bebe Neuwirth. For once Jenny finds her youthful spirit after looking into her reflection in a dirty mirror, Neuwirth breaks into Weill's classic power solos such as "The Saga of Jenny" and "The Tale of the Soldier's Wife" while performing physically striking choreography created by Ann Reinking.
