Honk! is the musical interpretation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson story 'The Ugly Duckling. The musical has been written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Hans Christian Andersons innocent story has been turned into a modern musical comedy. Honk! tells the story of Ugly, whose different and gawdy looks become a subject of speculation for his family and neighbors. He is the separated from his family and then pursued by a hungry cat. Ugly tries very hard to find his way back to his mother Ida. His loving mother is searching for him. As his fascinating journey continues he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but he also finds love and acceptance.
The show debuted firstly at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury on 11 December 1993. In this production the musical was called 'The Ugly Duckling or the Aesthetically Challenged Farmyard Fowl'. The shiw premiered in London in November at the Landor Theatre in Clapham. Graham Hubbard played the role of Ugly.

The National Theatre production of Honk! ran from 11 December 1999 to 25 March 2000. It was the first original British musical ever to be produced there. The production team was amply rewarded for their endeavors. The musical won the prestigious Oliver prize for Best New Musical in the year 2000.The score of Honk brims with with wit, melody and emotion. Kudos to George Stiles for a touching musical score. The score contains some great ballads and some bubbly and bouncy numbers. Some of the favorites are ‘Warts and All," "Hold Your Head Up High" and "Every Tear A Mother Cries." The entire cast is very effective in their respective roles. Performances by Nicolas Colicos as the Bullfrog and Kristin Marks as the ugly duckling's mother, Ida and worthy of praise.
