The show began as a project by Lin-Manuel Miranda (music and lyrics) and Quiara Alegria Hudes (Book) at Wesleyan University. In the Heights moved to the National Music Theatre Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT.
In the Height's first entrance into the New York theater scene came at the 37 Arts Theater, an off-Broadway stage. The 2007 off-Broadway featured direction by Thomas Kail, choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical direction by Alex Lacamoire.
